Glossary

so you know what’s in your cup

  • Espresso
A concentrated shot of coffee brewed by forcing hot water through finely ground beans. It’s the base for most coffee drinks.

  • Cappuccino
Equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and foam. Light, airy, and slightly stronger in flavor than a latte.

  • Latte
Espresso with more steamed milk and a thin layer of foam. Smooth, mellow, and easy to drink.

  • Flat White
Similar to a latte but with less milk and a thinner, velvety texture. More coffee-forward.

  • Americano
Espresso diluted with hot water. It has the depth of espresso with a lighter body, closer to drip coffee.
  • Drip Coffee
Coffee brewed by slowly passing hot water through ground beans. Clean, straightforward, and familiar.

  • Pour-Over
A manual brewing method where hot water is poured over coffee grounds in a filter. Brings out clarity and subtle flavors.

  • Cold Brew
Coffee steeped in cold water for several hours. Smooth, low acidity, and naturally slightly sweet.

  • Iced Coffee
Regular brewed coffee served over ice. Brighter and more acidic than cold brew.

Beans & Flavor

  • Single Origin
Coffee sourced from one region or farm. Often highlights specific flavor characteristics tied to that place.

  • Blend
A mix of beans from different regions, designed for balance and consistency.

  • Roast
Refers to how long coffee beans are roasted. Light roasts are brighter and more acidic; dark roasts are richer and more intense.

  • Body
The weight or texture of coffee on your palate. Can feel light like tea or full like cream.

  • Acidity
A bright, lively quality in coffee. Not sour, but crisp. Think citrus or green apple notes.

Behind the Bar (Insider Terms)

  • Extraction
The process of pulling flavor from coffee grounds using water. Too fast and it tastes sour; too slow and it turns bitter. When it’s right, it’s balanced and smooth.

  • Dialing In
What baristas do throughout the day to adjust grind size, dose, and timing so the espresso tastes the way it should. Coffee changes slightly hour to hour, so this is never “set and forget.”

  • Grind Size
How fine or coarse the coffee is ground. Espresso uses a very fine grind; pour-over is coarser. Grind size directly affects how the coffee extracts.

  • Dose & Yield
The amount of coffee used (dose) and the amount of liquid produced (yield). Getting this ratio right is what makes an espresso taste clean and balanced.

  • Milk Texture
Not just hot milk. Properly steamed milk should be glossy and smooth, with very fine bubbles. It’s what gives a latte or cappuccino that soft, velvety feel.

  • Microfoam
The silky, almost paint-like foam created when milk is steamed correctly. No big bubbles, no stiffness. Just smooth texture that blends into the coffee.

  • Crema
The golden layer on top of a fresh espresso. It comes from the oils and gases in the coffee and adds aroma and texture to the shot.

  • Bloom
In pour-over brewing, the first step where hot water hits the grounds and releases trapped gases. It looks like the coffee “puffs up” before the full brew begins.

  • Freshness
Coffee is best a few days after roasting, not immediately. Too fresh and it can taste uneven; too old and it goes flat. There’s a window where it really shines.
